What We Know

There is a remarkable story behind who is bringing East of Eden to Netflix. Zoe Kazan — who wrote and executive produced this adaptation — is the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, the director who made the iconic 1955 film with James Dean. That lineage matters: this is not an outsider taking on a classic, but someone who grew up with this story in her bones. Florence Pugh leads as Cathy Ames — one of the most fascinatingly monstrous characters in American literature — and has been attached to the project since 2022. The seven-episode limited series was filmed entirely in New Zealand, with Garth Davis directing the opening episodes and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre closing them out. Netflix dropped the first teaser trailer at their May 2026 Upfronts presentation — search for it, because it's worth two minutes of your time. The series premieres Fall 2026 — and if you haven't read Steinbeck's novel yet, there has never been a better time to start.
