Our Take
Icebreaker earned its fandom the old-fashioned way, chapter by chapter on Wattpad, before Hannah Grace polished it into the print phenomenon it is now. What makes it work isn't novelty, it's execution: the enemies-to-lovers scaffolding is familiar, but the banter between Stassi and Nathan has real snap, and Grace takes time to let both characters have interior lives beyond the romance, especially Stassi's grueling, unglamorous relationship with competitive skating. Fans of Elle Kennedy's The Deal will recognize the sports-romance DNA, right down to the locker room camaraderie and the slow unraveling of a guarded love interest. Readers who loved the tension-then-payoff structure of Ana Huang's Twisted Love will find a similar rhythm here, though Icebreaker keeps its angst grounded rather than melodramatic. It's also noticeably steamier than a lot of New Adult predecessors, which is exactly why it's a fitting pick for a spicier weekend read. If you want banter with teeth, a slow burn that actually simmers, and a sports backdrop that feels lived-in rather than decorative, this delivers. It's not reinventing the genre, but it's an exceptionally well-executed entry in it, and that's plenty.
