Wild Houses

Literary Fiction
Crime Fiction
288 pages

"Wild Houses got under my skin. Barrett writes small-town Ireland with such precision and menace, and Dev's quiet loneliness broke my heart while the kidnapping plot kept me tense."

Synopsis

In a rundown corner of County Mayo, Ireland, a low-level drug debt spirals into an act of desperate violence. Wild Houses centers on Dev, a solitary, oversized man living alone in his late mother's house, who finds himself an unwilling host when two brothers show up with their teenage hostage, Doll English, a boy caught in the crossfire of his brother's debts to a local crime family.

Our Take

Colin Barrett made his name with the short story collections Young Skins and Homesickness, and his debut novel carries over everything that made those books sing: a pitch-perfect ear for working-class Irish speech, an eye for the grim comedy of small-town life, and characters who feel achingly real even in a handful of pages. Wild Houses takes that sensibility and threads it through a tense, compact crime plot, resulting in something that reads like a literary novel wearing a thriller's clothes. Fans of Kevin Barry's Night Boat to Tangier or Paul Murray's The Bee Sting will recognize the mix of dark humor and genuine heartbreak here, while the slow-building dread recalls Tana French at her most atmospheric. Barrett's prose is spare but never cold; he finds tenderness in the unlikeliest places, particularly in Dev, whose grief and isolation give the novel its emotional center even as the kidnapping plot supplies the tension. This is a book for readers who want their crime fiction laced with real literary craft, who don't mind a slower burn in exchange for characters they'll actually remember. It's also a great entry point for anyone curious about contemporary Irish fiction beyond the big names, a writer whose short work has already earned serious acclaim finally getting the wider audience a novel affords.
