What We Know
The Hunger Games is returning to theaters — and this time, it's Haymitch's story. Sunrise on the Reaping adapts Suzanne Collins' 2025 novel, following a young Haymitch Abernathy through the brutal 50th Hunger Games — the Second Quarter Quell, where twice the usual number of tributes were taken from every district. Francis Lawrence, who directed every Hunger Games film since Catching Fire, returns to helm the adaptation, with a screenplay by Billy Ray, and the film hits theaters — including IMAX — on November 20, 2026.
Several actors are stepping into some pretty big shoes. Elle Fanning takes on a young Effie Trinket, Ralph Fiennes plays a younger President Snow, Maya Hawke steps in as a young Wiress, and Jesse Plemons takes on a younger Plutarch Heavensbee. And for fans of the original trilogy — yes, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are back as Katniss and Peeta. Read the book before the movie? Now's the time.
