"Bennett has created something truly special with Ana Dolabra—A Drop of Corruption is a locked-room mystery wrapped in fantasy brilliance."

Synopsis

In the remote canton of Yarrowdale, at the Empire's furthest edge, the impossible has happened. A Treasury officer has vanished from his quarters—a room locked from the inside, in a heavily guarded building with no possible exit. It's the kind of impossible crime that demands the Empire's most brilliant mind: the eccentric and formidable investigator Ana Dolabra, accompanied as always by her loyal assistant Dinios Kol. What begins as a baffling disappearance quickly transforms into something far more sinister—a murder that's merely the opening move in a deadly game. Their adversary is unlike any Ana has faced before: a killer who passes through warded doors as if they don't exist and who anticipates Ana's every deduction with uncanny precision. Worse still, all signs point to an attack on the Shroud, a high-security compound where the Empire's most brilliant scientists dissect fallen Titans to extract the volatile magic that powers civilization itself. If the Shroud falls, the consequences will be catastrophic—not just for Yarrowdale, but for the entire Empire. As the investigation intensifies and Ana finds herself consistently outmaneuvered, Din begins to wonder if his brilliant superior has finally encountered an opponent she cannot outwit.

Our Take

Robert Jackson Bennett proves that sequels can surpass their predecessors with this masterful follow-up to The Tainted Cup. Where the first book introduced us to Ana Dolabra's brilliant but eccentric detective methods, A Drop of Corruption raises the stakes by giving her an adversary who matches her intellect move for move. Bennett excels at blending classic locked-room mystery traditions with richly imagined fantasy worldbuilding—the result feels like Agatha Christie meets Brandon Sanderson. The dynamic between Ana and Din continues to be one of the series' greatest strengths, with their relationship deepening as the pressure mounts. What distinguishes this installment is how Bennett uses the fantasy elements not as window dressing but as integral to the mystery itself; the magic system creates genuinely new possibilities for both crime and detection. The Shroud facility, with its Titan dissections and volatile magic extraction, provides a claustrophobic, high-stakes setting that keeps the tension crackling throughout. Fans of The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison or The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty will appreciate Bennett's skill at creating intricate worlds that feel lived-in and authentic. This is fantasy mystery at its finest—intelligent, surprising, and utterly unputdownable.
