Spark of the Everflame
by Penn Cole
"Spark of the Everflame had me completely hooked. The tension between Diem and the heir is agonizing in the best way—I stayed up until 2am and have zero regrets."
Synopsis
In a mortal world colonized by gods and ruled by the Descended—their powerful, cruel offspring—Diem Bellator has always wanted more than the narrow life her poor village can offer. When her mother suddenly vanishes and a dangerous secret about her past comes to light, Diem finds herself with an unexpected path into the shadowy world of Descended royalty.
Navigating that world means contending with the dying King's handsome, watchful heir—and with a mortal resistance actively recruiting her for the growing civil war. To save her family and protect mortalkind, Diem must learn the unwritten rules of love, power, and politics faster than her enemies can use them against her.
Spark of the Everflame is the first book in the four-book Kindred's Curse Saga: a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers epic fantasy romance with magic, dragons, and the kind of aching tension that keeps you reading well past midnight. Perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses and From Blood and Ash.
Our Take
Penn Cole's self-published debut arrived with serious word-of-mouth momentum, and it earns it. The worldbuilding here is genuinely ambitious—a colonized mortal realm, a rigid god-blooded ruling class, and a civil war simmering underneath—but Cole never lets the lore overwhelm the emotional core of the story. What readers are really here for is Diem and the heir, and that dynamic delivers.
The slow burn is real. Cole is patient with the tension in a way that can feel almost cruel, and the enemies-to-lovers arc has enough genuine antagonism early on to make the eventual softening feel earned. Diem herself is a protagonist with real drive—she's not waiting to be chosen, she's actively making moves, even when those moves put her in danger.
If you've powered through A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout, or The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent and immediately wanted more, Spark of the Everflame belongs on your list. Cole is building something with real scope, and this is a confident, addictive start.
