Our Take
Andy Weir's novel was already one of the most beloved sci-fi books of the last decade — a book that somehow made orbital mechanics and astrobiology genuinely page-turning through the sheer infectious enthusiasm of its narrator. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directors behind The LEGO Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, have captured that same energy on screen, with Ryan Gosling delivering what may be the performance of his career. Drew Goddard, who adapted Weir's The Martian for Ridley Scott, returns for screenplay duties and once again proves he understands how to translate Weir's voice to cinema. The film is now streaming on Prime Video with a subscription — and if you haven't seen it yet, clear your evening. If you have, it holds up even better the second time.
