A Darker Shade of Magic

by V.E. Schwab

"Schwab's world-building is absolutely brilliant—this magical adventure had me completely hooked from the first chapter."

Synopsis

Kell is one of the last Antari, rare magicians with the ability to travel between parallel versions of London that exist in different worlds. Red London, where he lives, is vibrant with magic and ruled by the Maresh dynasty. Grey London, our own Victorian-era world, has largely forgotten magic exists. White London is ruled by power-hungry rulers who will do anything to strengthen their magical abilities. And Black London was consumed by magic and sealed away for the safety of all. As an official messenger between the worlds, Kell serves the Maresh royalty while secretly smuggling forbidden magical artifacts between the Londons. A Darker Shade of Magic begins when Kell's illegal smuggling brings him into possession of a dangerous artifact from Black London, setting off a chain of events that threatens the delicate balance between worlds. When he meets Lila Bard, a pickpocket from Grey London with her own ambitions and surprising magical potential, they become unlikely partners in a quest to save all the Londons from an ancient evil that should have remained buried. The novel follows their adventures as they navigate political intrigue, magical battles, and the growing connection between them while racing to prevent a catastrophe that could destroy everything Kell has sworn to protect. Through their journey, Schwab explores themes of duty, identity, and the price of power while building toward a climactic confrontation that will test both characters' courage and resolve.

Our Take

A Darker Shade of Magic launches V.E. Schwab's Shades of Magic trilogy with the kind of inventive world-building and compelling characters that have made her one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary fantasy. Her concept of parallel Londons is both original and brilliantly executed, creating a magic system and multiverse that feels logical and immersive while offering endless possibilities for adventure and exploration. Schwab's character development, particularly the dynamic between Kell and Lila, strikes an perfect balance between romantic tension and genuine partnership, avoiding the pitfalls that often plague fantasy romance. Her prose is accessible and fast-paced without sacrificing depth, making complex magical concepts understandable while maintaining the sophistication that adult readers expect. The novel's exploration of power, responsibility, and identity echoes the coming-of-age themes found in The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and The Magicians by Lev Grossman, but with Schwab's distinctive voice and more optimistic worldview. Her background in young adult fiction brings clarity and energy to the narrative while her adult fantasy sensibilities add complexity and moral nuance. Perfect for readers who enjoy fantasy adventures with strong romantic elements, innovative magic systems that feel both magical and logical, and series that promise epic scope with intimate character development. This series opener establishes Schwab as a master of fantasy world-building while delivering the kind of addictive storytelling that creates devoted readers eager for every subsequent volume.
