Groom's novel is a much darker, more absurdist satire than the film's earnest sentimentality suggests. In the book, Forrest becomes an astronaut, a wrestler, and even shares a prison stint, adventures largely cut for the streamlined screenplay. Jenny's arc is also substantially altered: the novel handles her fate and relationship with Forrest differently, with the film smoothing over much of the book's rougher edges. Lieutenant Dan's characterization is expanded and softened onscreen compared to his more bitter, minor presence in the source material. The film also invents the famous "box of chocolates" line, which does not appear in Groom's original text.
