Our Take
Lucy Foley built a career on the closed circle mystery, and The Guest List might be her tightest execution of the formula. Like Agatha Christie's classic setups, she strands a group of people somewhere they can't leave and lets suspicion do the rest, but she updates it with modern anxieties about image, ambition, and social climbing. Fans of *One by One* will recognize her knack for rotating perspectives that each reveal just enough to complicate the last. It also shares DNA with *The Silent Patient* in its structure, doling out reveals through fractured timelines rather than straightforward chronology. What makes this one work is the atmosphere: the boggy island, the flickering candlelight, the sense that the wedding itself is a performance everyone is trapped inside. Foley never lets you settle on one suspect for long, and the ending lands with a gut punch that recontextualizes earlier chapters. It's the kind of thriller best read in a weekend, ideally during a storm.
