Our Take
The Isle in the Silver Sea is Tasha Suri at her most romantic and devastating—a gorgeous meditation on fate, free will, and the stories we tell ourselves about love. Suri takes the star-crossed lovers trope and elevates it through her exploration of narrative as a living force, creating a world where folklore doesn't just reflect reality but actively shapes it. The relationship between Simran and Vina crackles with tension and tenderness, their awareness of their doomed history adding urgency to every stolen moment. What makes this romantasy exceptional is how Suri balances the sweeping mythic scope with intimate character work. The medieval British setting enriched with magical realism feels both familiar and freshly imagined, and the prose is lush without becoming overwrought. The meta-narrative element—stories hunting stories, characters trying to write their way out of fate—adds intellectual depth to the emotional journey. While the pacing occasionally slows for worldbuilding, the payoff is worth the patience. Fans of The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon and She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan will find much to love here. Suri proves once again why she's one of fantasy's most compelling voices, crafting a sapphic love story that's both achingly romantic and philosophically rich.
