"Lapena delivers another addictive page-turner—She Didn't See It Coming transforms a luxury condo into a pressure cooker of suspicion where everyone has secrets and no one can be trusted."

Synopsis

When a beloved wife and mother disappears, a luxurious condo building transforms into a potential crime scene, and the investigation begins: can the detectives find her before it's too late? Bryden and Sam have it all: thriving careers, a smart apartment in a luxury condominium, supportive friends and a cherished daughter. The perfect life for the perfect couple. Then Sam receives a call at his office. Bryden—working from home that day—has failed to collect their daughter from daycare. Arriving home with their little girl, he finds his wife's car in the underground garage. Upstairs in their apartment her laptop is open on the table, her cell phone nearby, her keys in their usual place in the hall. Except Bryden is nowhere to be seen. It's as if she just walked out. As detectives begin investigating the residents of the luxury building, secrets emerge and suspicions mount. Was Bryden's disappearance voluntary or forced? Is her husband hiding something? What about the neighbors who seemed so friendly? In the claustrophobic world of the condo, where everyone knows everyone's business but nobody tells the truth, the race is on to find Bryden before it's too late.

Our Take

Shari Lapena has built a devoted following with domestic thrillers like The Couple Next Door and An Unwanted Guest, and She Didn't See It Coming delivers exactly what her fans crave: propulsive pacing, claustrophobic settings, and the slow revelation that no one is quite who they seem. The luxury condo setting works brilliantly as a pressure cooker—the building's residents can't escape each other or the investigation, and their polite facades begin cracking under scrutiny. Lapena excels at the architecture of suspense, structuring chapters to end on hooks that make it nearly impossible to stop reading. She plants seeds of doubt about every character, including the missing woman herself, making readers constantly revise their theories about what happened. The prose is clean and uncluttered, prioritizing story over style in a way that keeps pages turning. Lapena understands that domestic thrillers work best when they exploit our fears about the people closest to us—what if your perfect marriage is a lie? What if your friendly neighbors are dangerous? What if the person you trust most is hiding something terrible? The mystery unfolds with satisfying precision, doling out clues and red herrings in equal measure. While literary thriller fans might find the characterization somewhat shallow, Lapena's strength lies in plot mechanics and maintaining suspense, not psychological depth. She writes thrillers designed to be devoured in one sitting, perfect for readers seeking escapist suspense rather than literary ambition. Fans of B.A. Paris's Behind Closed Doors or Ruth Ware's closed-circle mysteries will find She Didn't See It Coming equally addictive. For anyone seeking a fast-paced domestic thriller with enough twists to keep you guessing, Lapena delivers reliable, entertaining suspense that's perfect for a weekend read.
