What We Know
Peter Heller's 2012 novel has been quietly beloved since it was published — a lean, devastating, oddly beautiful book about survival, grief, and what it means to keep going when there's almost nothing left to go for. It found a devoted readership that has championed it ever since. Now Ridley Scott — the director behind Gladiator, Blade Runner, and The Martian — has adapted it for the big screen, with a screenplay by Mark L. Smith and Christopher Wilkinson, and a cast that suggests he took the source material seriously.
Jacob Elordi leads as Hig, with Josh Brolin opposite him as Bangley — one of the more fascinating odd-couple dynamics you'll find in any genre. The film was originally scheduled for March 2026 before being pushed to August 28th, and a trailer screened at CinemaCon drew strong early buzz. Filmed entirely on location across Italy — from the Alpine foothills to Cinecittà Studios in Rome — this one has the scale and craft to match the ambition of the book. If you haven't read it yet, now is a very good time to start!
