"Douglas pushes every boundary in this intense, controversial romance—not for the faint of heart but absolutely captivating."

Synopsis

Tiernan de Haas has never had a real home or family, bouncing between boarding schools and temporary guardians after her parents' death. At nineteen, she's tired of being everyone's burden and nobody's priority. When she's sent to live with her father's brother Jake and his two sons in a remote part of Colorado, she expects more of the same indifference she's experienced her whole life. Instead, she finds herself in a rugged mountain environment where survival requires self-reliance and where the three men she's living with are unlike anyone she's ever met. Jake is a hardened mountain man who's raised his sons Kaleb and Noah to be tough and independent. As Tiernan adapts to life in the wilderness, learning to hunt, fish, and fend for herself, she discovers a strength and confidence she never knew she possessed. But the isolation and intensity of mountain life creates unexpected tensions and attractions that challenge everything she thought she knew about family, desire, and herself. The novel explores themes of survival, self-discovery, and forbidden attraction as Tiernan navigates complex relationships in an environment where conventional social rules don't apply. Douglas crafts a story that pushes boundaries and examines how extreme circumstances can reveal hidden aspects of personality and desire. As Tiernan grows stronger and more confident, she must confront difficult choices about what she wants from life and love. Credence is a dark, intense romance that explores taboo themes while examining how people form connections and find belonging in unconventional circumstances.

Our Take

Douglas has created one of the most controversial and boundary-pushing romances in contemporary fiction, delivering a story that will divide readers but cannot be ignored for its boldness and emotional intensity. Her reputation for writing dark, complex romance novels that challenge conventional boundaries is fully on display in this polarizing work. Readers who appreciated her previous novels like Punk 57 and Birthday Girl will recognize Douglas's signature style of exploring taboo relationships and psychological complexity, though this novel pushes further into controversial territory than her previous work. The book succeeds in creating genuine character development for Tiernan, showing her transformation from dependent and lost to strong and self-assured through her wilderness experience. Douglas's writing is compelling and emotionally engaging, making readers invested in Tiernan's journey despite the controversial elements of the plot. The Colorado mountain setting is vividly rendered and serves as more than just backdrop, becoming integral to the characters' development and the story's themes about survival and self-discovery. While the novel's content will be challenging for many readers due to its taboo elements, Douglas handles the psychological aspects with more nuance than might be expected from such provocative material. The book raises questions about family dynamics, power structures, and what constitutes acceptable relationships that extend beyond simple titillation. Perfect for readers who enjoy dark romance that pushes boundaries, fans of Douglas's previous work who want to see her tackle her most controversial themes, and those seeking romance that challenges conventional moral frameworks. Credence is not recommended for readers sensitive to taboo content, but for those willing to engage with challenging material, it offers a unique and intensely emotional reading experience that will provoke strong reactions and lasting thoughts.
