"Derogatis writes chemistry that practically burns off the page—this book had me fanning myself and staying up way too late."

Synopsis

After a painful breakup and career setback in New York, twenty-eight-year-old Maya returns to her small hometown to regroup and figure out her next move. What she doesn't expect is to run into Ethan, her older brother's best friend who she's harbored a secret crush on since high school. Now a successful contractor with his own business, Ethan has grown into everything Maya fantasized about and more. When Maya takes a temporary job helping Ethan renovate a historic property, their professional relationship quickly becomes personal as years of suppressed attraction finally surface. Call it What You Want follows their passionate and complicated relationship as they navigate the forbidden territory of their connection while dealing with Maya's protective brother, small-town gossip, and their own emotional baggage. Maya is still healing from her ex's betrayal and struggling with self-doubt, while Ethan carries scars from his own past relationships and family trauma. Their chemistry is undeniable, but both must confront their fears about commitment and vulnerability. As their physical relationship intensifies, they're forced to decide whether what they have is just explosive sexual chemistry or something deeper worth risking their friendship and family relationships. The novel explores themes of second chances, healing, and finding the courage to pursue what you really want.

Our Take

Alissa Derogatis delivers a sizzling contemporary romance that perfectly balances steamy scenes with genuine emotional depth and character development. Her writing brings both Maya and Ethan to life as fully realized individuals with authentic flaws and believable motivations, making their connection feel earned rather than convenient. The forbidden aspect of their relationship adds delicious tension without feeling contrived, and Derogatis handles the brother's best friend trope with fresh energy and realistic complications. Readers who devoured Beach Read by Emily Henry will appreciate the blend of humor, heat, and heart, while fans of The Hating Game by Sally Thorne will connect with the workplace tension and slow-burn chemistry. Like The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, this novel features a heroine dealing with self-doubt and past trauma in a realistic, relatable way. Derogatis excels at writing intimate scenes that feel both incredibly hot and emotionally meaningful, never sacrificing character development for steam. The small-town setting adds charm without becoming cliché, and the renovation subplot provides a perfect metaphor for the characters' own emotional rebuilding. This is essential reading for romance fans who want their books both scorching and satisfying, with characters who feel like real people you'd want to root for.
