Celebrities Who Went From Riches To Rags

Although most of these stars began with millions of dollars in their bank accounts, one way or another, they found themselves in financial ruin. It can happen to anyone—even the people you least expect.

Heidi Montag

In the years following her MTV fame, Montag totally lost all of her fame...and all of her money! She recently got breast reduction surgery to get rid of her 6F breasts that she had done when she was on her show. She spent more money on that and then some more on expensive vacations. Luckily, she found a way out of the financial hole.

Spencer Pratt

Spencer Pratt, the counterpart to Heidi Montag, also ripped through his money following their MTV stint. The couple recalled going as far as to spend $15,000 while partying. He also claimed to have gifted his buddies thousands of dollars, fancy designer clothing, and even expensive cars!

Michael Vick

Michael Vick was once one of the best football players in the NFL, but his reign came crashing down when it turned out that he was involved in a dogfighting ring. Aside from his arrest, he was also dealing with about $20 million in debt to everyone from the Falcons to his former agent. He filed for bankruptcy in 2008.

Fantasia

We all thought Fantasia would have to world at her disposal when she won the third season of American Idol, but such was not the case. Her debut album, Free Yourself, even got her three Grammy noms. However, she lost it all in 2009 when her $1 million North Carolina home was going to be sold at auction if she could not pay back her loans. She was able to reach an agreement before the house was sold.

Natasha Lyonne

Natasha Lyonne has starred in "But I'm a Cheerleader" and "Orange Is the New Black" but she's had quite a rocky past. She had repeated damaging health problems and suffered from homeless and hospitalization frequently because of it. Even after hitting rock bottom, she managed to get back on her feet.

Brett Butler

"I was dying of addiction," said this stand-up comedian and actress. "I don't think about what I survived. I hope I forgive, I hope I'm forgiven and I'm just really glad that I think things are funny and there's no end to that." After living in a homeless shelter, she's still trying to get back on her feet and stay afloat.

Anthony Ciccone

Anthony Ciccone might better be known as Madonna's older brother. He's currently living in a homeless shelter while his sister is living the good life. In Michigan, he was asked about his status and said this: You think I haven't answered this kind of question a bazillion times — why my sister is a multibazillionaire and I'm homeless on the street?"

Ed McMahon

Known as Johnny Caron's sidekick for many years, this laughable goof has some pretty laughable financial choices. He made some bad moves in 2008 when he had people after him for the $644,000 owed on his $4.8 million home loan. "Well, if you spend more money than you make, you know what happens," he said.

Willie Aames

The star of shows like "Charles in Charge" and "Eight Is Enough" might seem like he's had it all, but he's also lost it all. He revealed in an interview that he spent part of his life in homelessness after going bankrupt. "At the very peak [of Eight Is Enough] I was making a little over a million dollars a year. Then suddenly there was no job, no bank account, no wife, no child," he said. "I never dreamt it could happen that fast."

Sly Stone

Sly Stone was a music legend in the funkadelic scene. However, things didn't stay so funky for him very long. He's recently been living out of a van parked in residential LA neighborhoods. According to him, it was various substances abused, mismanaged money, and excessive spending that forced him into homelessness.

Don Johnson

Miami Vice star Don Johnson was almost one of the most broke on this list. In 2006, the superstar was only hours away from losing his 17-acre mansion and land in Woody Creek, Colorado. The foreclosed property was set to be auctioned off, but Johnson paid $14.5 million in delinquent debts at the last minute to keep it.

Mickey Rooney

Mickey Rooney had a quiet struggle with money his whole career. He spent his early successes having fun, wildly overspending, and having way too much fun. At his lowest but most famous, he had just $500 to his name. By the time of his death in 2014, he had fully recovered his finances.

Judy Garland

Judy Garland might have been America's sweetheart but she was no finance wizard. Due in part to her poor money skills, frequent mismanagement, and even embezzlement. She ended up owing a lot of dollars in taxes to the IRS. She lived her life pretty much penniless despite her repeated success.

Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen is an infamous actor who has a net worth of $10 million, though his actual bank account has looked much lower than that. He currently owes the government over $5 million in back taxes and unpaid debts. He used to make $613,000 a month, but now he makes about $87,834. Yikes!

Chris Tucker

Chris Tucker went for broke after his massive success with Rush Hour and Money Talks. However, even with $20 million in the bank, he couldn't make it last. He made poor investments, stopped working altogether, and even ended his mildly successful stand-up career. Chris just couldn't make it work...

Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday lost it all when she was a star. After years of heroin abuse on top of being swindled and underpaid, Holiday couldn't survive on her earnings alone. She died with only $0.70 in the bank. Not even royalties could get her out of the gutter, and she passed away with nothing to her name but great songs.

Azealia Banks

Banks is one of the most cancelled and cruel celebrities out there after allegations of her boiling her cat came forward. Since that, as well as other controversies, she's struggled for work and fans. Her bank account has been crashing slowly but surely in the last few years.

R. Kelly

Easy to rack up debts when you're in jail, like former R&B star R. Kelly. After numerous accounts of sexual abuse came out against him, Kelly's mildly successful career was enough to pay various fines, lawsuits, and legal fees. With allegations this bad, he's not getting any new fans buying his tracks either.

Michael Jackson

The King of Pop was in quite a bit of debt-- about $400 million of it-- before he died suddenly in 2009. Neverland Ranch was taken by the bank before he passed, and his CFO was able to sell the mansion to cover the rest of his payment in his wake. Oddly enough, Jackson would later become the top-earning dead celebrity in 2012, making Sony a massive paycheck of profit in his absence.

Nick Cage

Nicolas Cage was one of Tinsel Town's biggest stars until recently. Once his career slowed down in 2011, Cage realized that he wouldn't be able to continue to pay for the homes, automobiles, expensive art, and weird artifacts that he had bought over his lifetime. Cage had to pay $6 million in back taxes from 2007, but after losing it all, he was able to get back some of it and fix himself financially by 2016.

Johnny Depp

At his peak, Depp was bringing home $30 million per Pirates of the Caribbean film. Sadly, in 2017, Depp had to sit down with his advisors to talk about his reckless spending habits. He had garnered some insanely deep debt. Depp sued his team for $25 million. His financial group then exposed his wild spending receipts in court. Apparently, he pays over $33,000 a month on wine alone.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Mayweather might be known as "Money," but that's not something he has to his name. The IRS is owed $22.2 million by Mayweather, but he went into retirement. He came out of this in 2018 for a fight to rake in some extra dough, but it's now looking like he might have to reappear in the ring again to get out of this issue.

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson used to be worth almost $400 million, but that changed in 2003 when he went into $23 million of debt. He declared bankruptcy, went to prison, and entered rehab before getting his finances in order. These days, Tyson is relatively stable in the money department. He debuted his own THC company, and he plans on expanding it one day to a cannabis-themed resort.

Burt Reynolds

"I've lost more money than is possible because I just haven't watched it," said the mustached actor in a 2015 Vanity Fair interview. Reynolds had an unchecked spending spree that lasted over 2 decades. He got his comeuppance back in 1996 when he needed to file for bankruptcy. Thankfully, when his hit film Boogie Nights came out just one year later, Reynolds made back his money and then some extra!

Meat Loaf

Meat Loaf was a majorly beloved star in the 1970s when he debuted his hits like Rocky Horror Picture Show and Bat Out of Hell, but he fell into a money hole during 1983. He started to resurface in the 1990s, but he was never able to get that cash back.

50 Cent

In 2015, rapper 50 Cent owed more than 50 cents in payment. In fact, it was around more like $32.5 million to be paid to various outlets. He was a mess when it came to taxes, house payments, and supporting his child. He filed for bankruptcy in 2016, and he is still slowly recovering from his downfall. Luckily for him, he is still getting regular royalties from his singles in the 1990s and early aughts.

Will Smith

Before Will Smith's massive success, the IRS took away most of his items due to the fact that he owed the government around $2.8 million. Smith was forced to declare bankruptcy right before he was selected to star in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Unfortunately, the star needed to fork over 70% of his salary to the IRS during the first few years of the series.

Willie Nelson

Willie managed to avoid his taxes until 1990. It was then that the IRS invaded his house and took nearly all of his home goods. Nelson owed the IRS around $16.7 million, including interest and various fees. Nelson held a fundraiser, which made it possible for him to continue making his tunes and to totally pay off his debt.

Cyndi Lauper

Lauper started her life with a conglomeration of amazing failures. Her first record with the band Blue Angel was a massive flop, and her manager even sued her for $80,000. In 1981, Lauper was required to file bankruptcy. After she released her hit solo album She's So Unusual, she recovered some of her cash. Afterward, she went on to become a Grammy-winning artist and icon to people around the world.

Aaron Carter

Aaron Carter was once a hit teen singer, but his descent from the stage kept him so far away from the spotlight that he was unable to pay his debts. "When I turned 18, I got hit with all those taxes. I filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy last year; now I'm already over $100,000 in debt," said Carter in an interview with Esquire during 2018. These days, Carter has been able to gain back some of his losses, and even released an album that did decently.

T-Pain

T-Pain almost lost it all when his career was at its height. Once upon a time, he had about $40 million in his bank account. Unfortunately,  due to a collection of poor investments, he lost it all. On the bright side, this taught him how to manage his finances, and now he is doing significantly better than in the years prior.

Dennis Rodman

Dennis Rodman just might be one of the greatest basketball players who ever lived, but also one of the most bonkers. He stopped playing the game and was soon unable to support his crazy lifestyle. In 2012, Rodman filed for bankruptcy because he owed the government $800,000. In past years, Rodman has earned some extra cash doing documentaries, interviews, and building up his personal brand.

Gary Busey

Gary Busey is one of the few performers alive right now that is almost exclusively hired to act as a "crazy guy" character. After a car accident left him tragically injured, he fell into medical debt. It didn't help that he uncovered an advanced form of cancer on the same day. Every role he plays helps pay off the debt he still struggles under.

Lindsay Lohan

Early adulthood filled with reckless partying and unchecked addiction guided Lohan into bankruptcy in 2012. She tried to earn back her lost cash by releasing a pop album, which did terribly and actually ended up putting her further into debt. In 2018, Lohan talked about her money troubles in an interview. She revealed that she had turned over a new leaf and was worth $800,000 during the era.

Pamela Anderson

Pamela Anderson had her money together for most of her career, but when the IRS discovered that she hadn't been sending in her taxes, they went right after her. The government seized her $35 million worth of assets, and Pamela was required to live in a trailer with her kids. After the new Baywatch was released the starlet has managed to get her life back on track.

Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser became an A-lister at the start of his career. At his height, he was getting about $12 million annually. After one too many intense roles ruined his body, the actor struggled to hold a job. This sent him into a depressive episode. He lost it all and is currently trying to lower his alimony costs from $900,000 to something he can likely pay. It is believed that the majority of his cash now goes to child support.

Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke began his career in a boxing ring, but he ended up leaving to become an actor when he discovered that earned him more attention and even better...cash. When the money began coming in, Rourke started taking tons of drugs, drinking, throwing lavish parties. Eventually, he was accruing massive amounts of debt. Rourke never was able to recover from his wild spending...

Courtney Love

Since Courtney Love was connected to Kurt Cobain, she was pretty well off when he passed. Her own band, Belly, didn't see much success. The lack of money added chaos to her life, and she relapsed, which then led to her selling the rights to Kurt's beloved Nirvana songs which she owned. These days, Love is doing a little bit better. She has been clean and successful for quite some time.

Elton John

After the height of his career, Elton John found himself on the brink of bankruptcy in 2002. Sir Elton had a very difficult spending problem. He collected a crazy amount of credit card debt ( about $2 million) in just a single year. John defaulted on his loans and managed to earn back all of his cash and then a lot more when the movie Rocketman hit theaters. Today, he's $100 million richer.

Miles Teller

Before he was becoming an actor, Miles Teller tried his hand as a fashion student. He then switched to acting during his freshman year at NYU, and he was picked up for a few roles before he even finished college. He took out over $100,000 in student loans to do so and remain on track. Despite his success, he is still struggling to pay off his student loans like the rest of us.

Stephen Baldwin

Baldwin was required to file bankruptcy in 2009. He was way behind on paying his taxes, home loans, credit card debt, and personal payments that he couldn't even dream of repaying. Baldwin's house was foreclosed upon during 2017, and he was incarcerated shortly afterward for not paying taxes. He served his time for about five years but is still trying to work on paying back the money he owes.

Anna Nicole Smith

Anna Nicole Smith was able to change her modeling gig into a reality tv career, which eventually worked against her. She married 86-year-old billionaire J. Howard Marshall only three months before his passing, and he ended up leaving her not a penny. She had to file for bankruptcy after a sexual harassment case against her won a former employee the last $800,000.

Dionne Warwick

Warwick's voice is one of the most beloved in pop culture, but despite her past of being a top-tier singer, she filed for bankruptcy in 2013. It took about $10 million in debt and a net worth of just $25,000 to get her out of the way. Since those years, Dionne Warwick built up a tremendous amount of personal wealth. She says her frugal saving regimine is what kept her worth around $10 million.

Tom Petty

Tom Petty filed for bankruptcy in 1979. The only difference was he was not broke; the stint was just a legal trick to get himself out of a damaging contract with a record label that refused to pay him due. They took in all of his cash--millions of dollars --while believing that they were deeply in debt and needed a bailout. He needed to get the attention of the IRS and the Better Business Bureau. He ended up winning the case, closing down the label, and taking all of his lost profits.

Francis Ford Coppola

Francis Ford Coppola is more focused on wine than films these days, and that's likely because of his famous budget blunders from his film sets. After Apocalypse Now, he went into serious financial ruin. Despite the movie's success, he lost even more when his following movie, One From the Heart, fell short. Coppola declared bankruptcy in 1982, but a few years later he opened one of the most popular wineries ever made.

Mark Twain

Although Twain seemed to be wealthy and had a rich spouse, his line of work wasn't exactly a payout. It was barely enough for the two of them to live comfortably. Twain's publishing company lost everything in 1894, and he was forced to declare bankruptcy. Slowly but surely, Twain's finances got back on track, but he then lost $30,000 from a shifty investment. He never made that money back...

Walt Disney

Nowadays, the Walt Disney Company is worth over $130 billion, but back in the day, Walt was forced to declare bankruptcy when he couldn't deliver products to his investors in a good enough time frame. Disney didn't call it quits though, and his career succeeded finally when he created a new character by the name of Mickey Mouse.

Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye is one of the most notable musicians ever, but he didn't make enough cash to make it to the end of his career. He filed for bankruptcy in 1976 because he lost his footing on his alimony payments. Gaye was required to pay his ex-wife over $600,000 worth of royalties from his impending release, but before he could complete the payments, Gaye was killed by his father with a gunshot.

Don Johnson

After CNB asked Johnson to repay a reported $1 million that he owed in loans and taxes, he filed for bankruptcy. That meant that his car, house, and possessions were all removed from his possession. He borrowed money from a friend to start a lawsuit that would prevent his house from getting foreclosed upon, but that was a huge misstep and he lost the case.

MC Hammer

MC Hammer profited $30 million from his hit single "U Can't Touch This." This massive wealth encouraged Hammer to buy a $1 million house and hired 200 butlers to care for him. He got mixed up in some lofty lawsuits, and he was required to declare bankruptcy in 1996 when it was revealed that he owed the IRS about $13 million. He made his cash back by smartly investing in some promising tech startups, which he revealed in 2011 on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger invested $20 million into Braselton, Georgia. She had big goals to create a tourist attraction in the area, but rather than that, she filed for bankruptcy in 1993 and sold the land to someone else. She was able to recover pretty quickly thanks to the money that she got back from purchasing basically a whole city, which also allowed her to get parts in blockbuster films like 8 Mile and Fifty Shades Darker.

Gary Coleman

Coleman was a child actor who earned around $70,000 per episode of his hit show "Diff'rent Strokes" from the '80s. The series concluded in '86, and which is when he discovered his family and financial advisor were losing his money. In 2005, the IRS sued him for failing to pay the $1.8 million he owed them on his mortgage, which was eventually taken only 5 years later. Nowadays, all of Newton's assets have been liquidated. The famous face has been in ruin ever since.

Larry King

Believe it or not, Larry King lost it all in the '70s. The talk show host was charged with grand larceny and was also accused of stealing $5,000 from his business partner. King was unable to recover, even after the charges eventually were dropped. He filed for bankruptcy in 1978. A national talk show offered him a leading spot that same year, which eventually became "Larry King Live."

Toni Braxton

Twice in her life, Braxton was required to file for bankruptcy. In 1998, she was forced to file for bankruptcy due to her recording contract which was paying her almost nothing. This wasn't reinforced by her wild spending habits. She had to file again more in 2008 when she was forced to cancel a tour due to recurring health problems. These days, however, Toni Braxton is doing the best she's ever been!

The '70s heartthrob worked against an addiction to drinking, which resulted in him getting numerous DUIs. It wasn't long until his wife divorced him, which pushed him completely into financial ruin in 2014. Tragically, Cassidy passed due to alcoholism issues in 2017.

Isaac Hayes

Isaac Hayes, in 1976, filed for bankruptcy. One of the most important artists of the '70s, Hayes said that he owed over $6 million in taxes, but he was unable to repay the debt. He blamed his record label for poorly handling his finances. He lost a load of cash through personal lending schemes. Hayes made more music, opened a couple of restaurants, and penned a recipe book before he passed in 2008.

Wesley Snipes

Sorry Blade, but it turns out that even you cannot run from the IRS. The actor was required to spend three years in jail for income tax evasion. He began his sentence in 2012 and ended it in 2013. His co-stars have all since denounced the claims he made in his novels.

Joey Lawrence

Grant passed away while he awaited a series of essays that he asked Mark Twain to write so he could make enough money to keep going.

Jodie Sweetin

Jodie Sweetin saw her job options take a serious dip after her time on Full House ended in the 1990s. Donald Trump

Hard to imagine, but Trump was once totally broke. Once he schemed the system, filing for corporate bankruptcy instead of personal bankruptcy, it was revealed that he had filed over 4 times in his life before being elected president. Today, Trump is more than $400 million in debt and should have to face the New York State courts on criminal tax evasion charges.

Debbie Reynolds

The start of Singin' in the Rain was one of Hollywood's most beloved actresses for decades. After she stopped landing gigs, Reynolds became an investor. This starlet was schemed by a lawyer and an accountant team to give all of her money away to them with the promise of management. These two ran off with her entire bank account, and she was left penniless. Homelessness, substance abuse, robbing a video store, and more resulted in this star sadly overdosing in 1994.

Todd Bridges

The Diff'rent Strokes crew was destined to fall apart it seems. Todd Bridges was the last one of them. After a serious drug addiction took over his life, he lost almost all of his finances. At one point, he was earning the minimum wage for an actor, even though he had been making around $15,000 to 30,000 a week prior. The money and time were never recovered.
